How to Be Unbotherd and Unaffected by Upside-down Circumstances

We live in a fallen, crazy, upside-down world. That’s a fact. However, allowing it to bother or affect you is on you.

Sounds harsh, but you know deep down that it’s true.

While the reasons may vary, I have found 3 main areas that keep us feeling bothered and affected by the upside-downness of this world.

And if you’ve been around here any length of time, you know that I believe feelings are indicators of a bigger issue. One that keeps us stuck! I pull the thread on this in Chapter 5 of You’re A Beautiful MESSterpiece.

Worry, speculation, and pain are among the chief situations and circumstances that keep our personal worlds upside-down.

We’re going to tackle each of these usual suspects one by one so that we can begin to unravel the lie and reveal the truth that will ultimately set us free!

Take a second to think of the sheer energy it requires to worry and the toll it takes on you.

Now imagine that energy focused on things that are true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, and admirable. Think of things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Anyone recognize this as Philippians 4:8?

But before this instruction of what to focus on, the preceding verses tell us WHERE to direct our worry and WHY.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NLT

Worry is a waste of thoughts, words and time. How much time, words, and thoughts have you been wasting lately and what are you willing to do about it?

Flip the worrier mindset into a warrior one. That’s how you actively and effectively fight what worries you. Battling for truth over lies requires you to believe God’s actual promises over your perspective about them.

I find praying scripture is how I can put myself in a position of offense instead of having to defend the attacks to my mindset.

Now let’s look at another pattern of thought that can trip us up and keep us bothered in this world.

Turning yourself inside out and upside-down is often the usual path of speculation.

Tell me I’m wrong. I know I have speculated about things over and over and every which way – only to have them turn out completely unexpected. (at least according to my calculations)

Now I don’t know about you, but I’m not one who wants to be remembered as one who sucked the hope out of God’s solutions. You?

Of course not! We need to be one’s known for not only embracing hope, but spreading it!

Listen, no matter how bad things seem or even get, God’s got you. I know you know this verse, but it truly is a fitting reminder.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 NLT

Make no mistake, hope is not wishful thinking. Hope is the confident expectation that God is faithful and keeps His promises.

Ask yourself where you’re hope is right now? Is it in one of the 4 Frustrating F’s: Family/Friends, Finances, (your) Fuel, or Faith? I have a lot to say about these areas and how they affect us in Chapter 5 of my book.

Having a proper perspective of what hope is (and isn’t) will be a key factor on whether or not life’s messes bother you or not.

Lastly, I want to talk about a big one.

The thing that probably keeps us ashamed, bothered, and the most upside-down, is the pain we tolerate.

No one is immune to pain. At some point in your life (or day, let’s be honest) there is a pain you are faced with and have to deal with.

Here’s the kicker, friend. Most of the pain we deal with (and tolerate) is a heart and mind issue before it shows up in our bodies.

Trying to hide, ignore, or numb it hoping it will just “go away” doesn’t work, no matter how many times you repeat this practice.

Healing begins in the heart and mind. And yes, physical pain is real, but we can absolutely make up our minds for how we’re going to deal with it. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Proverbs 4:23 NLT

God invites us to come however we are, broken, bruised, and even burdened. That pain does not go unnoticed by our Creator. He sees and offers hope and healing (Psalm 147:3). But we have to take the first steps: trust Him, believe Him, and obey Him.

Your identity is not in your pain, but who you are in Christ. A beloved child of the King worthy of love and healing!

Don’t settle for just tolerating you pain. Confront it with the hope and truth of God’s Word.

Take action today to by not copying the customs and behaviors of this upside-down world, but allow God to transform the very way you think. Then you’ll learn to know God’s will for you, which is good, pleasing and perfect!(Romans 12:2)

Worry, speculation, and the pain we tolerate can turn our worlds upside-down, but God provides a way and the strength to overcome them all!

Cast your worries on Him because He CARES for you. Put your hope His plans for you – they’re GOOD. Bring Him your pain, He can not only handle it, but HEAL it!

Embracing these truths will keep us unashamed, unbothered and unaffected by the upside-down world we live in, but are not OF. We are of a different Kingdom altogether.

Choose hope over worry, faith over speculation, and healing over pain. Your identity is rooted in Christ, not your situation or circumstance and you’re promised victory through Him.

Now get out there and walk boldly in God’s love, reflect His grace, and stand tall shining the Light within you for this upside-down world to see!
